Because communication is the basis of everything we do in life.

Research says that with any successful person their attitude and interpersonal skills make up 85% of their effectiveness and only 15% is attributed to their technical skills. So, when it comes to communications, it is hardly ever how well we say things, but it is how well we are understood. Understanding is the key.

The first step in Understanding is having a Rapport with others. Another way to look at Rapport is “getting people to like you”. This becomes the first step to building relationships.

Understanding is the key aspect in any communication. We must have a complete understanding of the other person and make sure we get the other person to understand us. However you accomplish this is entirely up to you. Some people say that it is the other person’s responsibility to understand us. If that is our attitude, not much will change. We must take the pro-active approach and be the one that wants to make our life better. We need to make sure we are totally understood before we try to understand the other person. When we take the lead, we make the progress, in life and in business. One of the best ways to understand the other person is to listen. Sometimes we think we understand the other person but we understood what we think we heard.

Remember:

it is understanding what the other person meant.

When we talk about communicating we are talking about mutual understanding. Some people have gotten into the habit of “talking” and not listening.

If we are truly interested in the other person, we will listen to understand.

A good way to “learn” about the other person is to ask some questions. Asking good questions definitely has an affect of the quality of our life. Asking the right question will always give us the right answer. If we do not ask questions we will not get any information, and, consequently, we will never have any understanding. For everything in this world that has ever been invented or created, someone had to ask the question;

“What if we could_______?”

There are two basic reasons to ask questions;

1. Ask questions that will help you understand the other person.

2.Ask questions that will help you learn.

The only way we can get better at asking the right question is practice.

If we “practice” asking the right questions it will lead to the “habit” of asking the right questions.

There are basically two types of questions, open ended and closed ended. Open ended questions are those that require the other person to “explain”, “describe”, “tell me about”, questions that require a full response. These questions require the other person to tell you their opinion.

The closed ended questions require a very short, specific response. Questions that can be answered with a yes or no, black or white, day or night. These questions require a decision.

These two questions can also be looked at like this:

1. The open ended questions get you the information the other person

wants to tell you

2. The closed ended questions get you the information you want.

Whenever a person is quiet and reserved, the easiest way to open them up is to begin asking them open ended questions. The more a person talks, especially about themselves, the more comfortable they become with you.

Once a person is comfortable with you, the more effective the communication can be for all concerned. The more comfortable a person becomes with you the more trust is built. The more trust is built, the better the attitudes are, the better actions will be taken, and the better relationships will be built.

All this begins with concern for the other person.

There are times when we have disagreements with others. One thing we all have a tendency to do is get “stuck” on our way of thinking. Would it help to see the other person’s point of view? That is called Perspective. Just because someone else sees things from a different perspective does not mean they are wrong. If we want to be able to make things work, it is our responsibility to try to see their perspective. It does not mean that we have to agree with the other person, just try to understand.
